Festmap

A map for exploring festivals and local events

Archived2025.12Solo project

A personal prototype for discovering festivals, local events and performances in Japan and Korea through a map and event list. It was designed to show dates, regions, categories and official source links. Work on the prototype stopped in December 2025 because collecting and reliably updating event data proved difficult.

Background & purpose

Festival, concert, and local-event information was scattered across organizers and local websites, making it difficult to discover what was happening in an unfamiliar area. I explored a map-based way to search by date, location, and category. Development stopped at the prototype stage because I could not establish a sustainable way to collect, verify, and update the event data.

01 / OVERVIEW

Overview

The idea started with a desire to find local event information scattered across different websites in one place.

02 / MY CONTRIBUTION

My contributions

Solo concept, UI prototyping and deployment experiments

01

Outlined a unified Japan/Korea event-discovery service

02

Designed prefecture map and event-pin exploration

03

Prototyped with Next.js, Supabase and Vercel

04

Explored SVG mapping and region-selection interaction

03 / PROCESS

Approach

The prototype explored a Japan map with selectable prefectures and clickable event pins. Visual experiments focused on highlighting a selected region and giving the map a subtly three-dimensional look.

Implementation and challenges

Event information is fragmented across organizers and local authorities, and dates can change. A sustainable process for sourcing, verifying and updating those records was the main unresolved issue.

Key features

  • Map and event-pin discovery concept
  • Event date, region, category and source metadata
  • Region highlighting and layered map experiments

Development approach

Used AI coding assistance while planning and building the personal prototype.
